On the 10th December 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which had been drawn up by a series of meetings of the Commission of Human Rights and the Commission on the Condition of Women as well as major discussions which took place during the first seven sessions of the Economic and Social Council. The General Assembly presented this Declaration "as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education … and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance …"

C'est le Io décembre 1948 que l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies adopta la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme. Celle-ci avait été préparée par une série de réunions de la Commission des droits de l'homme, de la Commission de la condition de la femme ainsi que d'importantes discussions poursuivies au cours des sept premières sessions du Conseil économique et social. L'Assemblée générale présenta cette Déclaration « comme l'idéal commun à atteindre par tous les peuples et toutes les nations, afin que tous les individus et tous les organes de la société, ayant cette Déclaration constamment à l'esprit, s'efforcent par l'enseignement et l'éducation … et … par des mesures progressives d'ordre national et international, d'en assurer l'application universelle et effective ».
